You can explore your options by searching for the subject you wish to teach. In my case it was primary but it could be that you are interested in teaching at secondary school level, in which case you can select your particular subject, which would normally be associated with your degree.
Next come the different training options. There are several different ways that you can train to teach:
- University Based: A Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) is probably the traditional route into teaching. This course would be run by a university with around a third of your time on the course spent in the university, with the remainder at two school placements.
- School Direct: On this programme you are teaching from the outset, based in a teaching school. For this course, you normally spend four days a week at the placement and one day at the partnership university. Some School Direct places are salaried.
- Return to Teacher: If you are a former teacher looking to get back into the profession, there are courses available.
- Overseas Teacher: The website has links to other UK government sites with information for teachers from abroad.
- Troops to Teachers: There is a programme aimed specifically at serving or former members of the armed forces.
- Teach First: This scheme identifies future school leaders and places them in low income area schools.
The website goes on to give further advice about completing application and other areas, but I suggest that at the first stage you simply register that you are interested. This means you will receive updates from the Get Into Teaching site. I found that they are pretty good at not bombarding you with information.
